The Weekend Isn't The Answer

I'm not talking about singing, or Iverson (wait for it...).
You've been waiting for Saturday.
Not because you earned it. Because you survived the week and needed a witness.
"Happy Humpday". "Happy Friday". "Working for the Weekend" (Thank you, Loverboy).
Somewhere between Monday's ambition and Friday's "I'll deal with it later," the gap between who you are at work and who you actually are got wide enough to park a truck in. And now it's Saturday and you're standing in your kitchen in yesterday's shirt wondering why you feel like a stranger in your own weekend. Or maybe you're pluggin' away at your kids' games, half in, half out.
That is not balance.
Here is the thing nobody wants to hear over their morning coffee. If your week is draining enough that you need 48 hours to recover from it, the week is broken. Not the weekend. The weekend is just the moment you stop long enough to feel the damage, only to start Sundays with anxiousness of prepping for Monday.
Those who thrive are not the ones who white-knuckle it Monday through Friday and finally show up on Saturday like it's parole. These are the ones who decided that showing up is not a weekend-only offer. That the workout doesn't happen when the calendar clears. That the real conversation doesn't wait until Sunday when "rested enough to have it". That rest will need to wait. The version of self worth being around is not a limited weekend release.
Work life integration is not a productivity hack. It is a decision about who you are every single day. Not who you perform as from nine to five and who you finally get to be when the laptop closes.
The question worth sitting with this Saturday, maybe between the second cup of coffee and whatever you are pretending to do in the garage (I see you...been there, done that), is not what do I want to do today. It's why did I need five days to get here.
Because the ones who build the week around the life they want to live do not need the weekend to bring themselves back to self.
